Personal Budget in PIP: Understanding Your Award

PIP Rates 2026/27: How Much Is PIP and What Does Your Award Mean?

If you have received a Personal Independence Payment (PIP) decision, one of the first questions is usually: how much PIP will I get? Your payment depends on whether you qualify for the daily living component, the mobility component, or both, and whether each component is awarded at the standard or enhanced rate.

For 2026/27, the weekly PIP rates are £76.70 or £114.60 for daily living and £30.30 or £80.00 for mobility. PIP is tax-free, is not affected by your income or savings, and is usually paid every four weeks.

This guide explains the current PIP award rates, how the points system affects your award, what the figures on your PIP decision letter mean and what to do if you think your award is wrong.

What Are the PIP Rates for 2026/27?

The current weekly PIP rates for the 2026/27 benefit year are:

PIP componentStandard rateEnhanced rate
Daily living£76.70 a week£114.60 a week
Mobility£30.30 a week£80.00 a week

PIP is usually paid every four weeks. Your actual four-week payment depends on which component or components you receive and at what rate. The amount is not reduced because you work, have savings or receive income from another source.

How Are PIP Awards Calculated?

PIP is not calculated by looking at your diagnosis alone. The assessment looks at how your health condition or disability affects specific daily living and mobility activities. Each activity contains descriptors, and each descriptor carries a number of points.

The daily living and mobility components are scored separately. For each component:

  • 8 to 11 points normally gives the standard rate.
  • 12 points or more normally gives the enhanced rate.
  • If you score fewer than 8 points for a component, you do not receive that component.

The points do not increase the payment pound by pound. Once you reach the threshold for standard or enhanced rate, you receive the fixed weekly amount for that component. This is why two people with different total scores can still receive the same weekly rate.

Examples of PIP Award Amounts

AwardWeekly amountTypical 4-week amount
Standard daily living only£76.70£306.80
Enhanced daily living only£114.60£458.40
Standard daily living + standard mobility£107.00£428.00
Standard daily living + enhanced mobility£156.70£626.80
Enhanced daily living + standard mobility£144.90£579.60
Enhanced daily living + enhanced mobility£194.60£778.40

These four-week figures are simply four times the weekly rate. Your first payment or a payment following a change in award can be different because the effective date of the decision may affect the amount due.

What Does My PIP Award Letter Mean?

Your PIP decision letter should tell you whether you have been awarded the daily living component, the mobility component, or both. It should also show whether each component is at the standard or enhanced rate, when the award starts, how long the award lasts and when it may be reviewed.

When reading the letter, check the following carefully:

  • Which PIP component or components you have been awarded.
  • Whether the rate is standard or enhanced.
  • The points awarded for the activities considered.
  • The start date of the award.
  • The length of the award and any review date.
  • The payment information and any arrears due.

If the letter does not reflect the help you need or you believe the points are wrong, do not focus only on the total amount of money. Look at the individual activities and descriptors because those are what determine the award.

If you think the award is wrong, you may be able to challenge the decision. Read our guide on how to appeal a PIP decision for the next steps and the relevant time limits.
